How to split a GIF into frames

  1. Upload the GIF

Drop an animated GIF up to 30 MB. Its frame count is shown under the preview.

  2. Choose what to export

All frames, a range such as 10 to 40, or every 2nd, 3rd or Nth frame.

  3. Pick PNG or JPG

PNG keeps transparency and exact colors. JPG makes smaller files and fills transparent areas with a color you choose.

  4. Download the frames

Grab single frames from the grid or download everything as one ZIP.

Why extract frames from a GIF?

Pulling a GIF apart is useful in more situations than you'd think. Designers grab a single frame as a thumbnail or poster image. Animators fix one bad frame and rebuild the loop.

Developers turn GIFs into sprite sheets for games, and teachers drop key moments from an animation into slides.

Full frames, not fragments

An optimized GIF often stores only a small patch for each frame: the part that changed. Exporting those patches directly would give you a pile of mostly transparent scraps.

We rebuild every frame first, so each image shows exactly what's on screen at that moment, at the GIF's full width and height.

Exporting less than everything

Long GIFs can have hundreds of frames, and neighboring frames are often nearly identical. Use Every Nth to grab every 2nd or 5th frame for a quick overview.

Use From and To to cut out just one action. The frame numbers match the order the GIF plays in, starting at 1.

What's in the ZIP

Files are numbered with leading zeros, like frame-001.png, so they sort correctly in every file manager and import in order into editors and the GIF Maker. A short README is included too.

Split GIF questions

Are the frames full images or just the changed parts?

Full images. Optimized GIFs store only what changed between frames, so we rebuild each frame to exactly what you see at that moment in the animation before saving it.

Should I choose PNG or JPG?

Choose PNG if you plan to edit the frames, need transparency or want pixel-perfect colors. Choose JPG for photos you just want to share, since the files are smaller. JPG has no transparency, so clear areas are filled with the background color you pick.

How many frames can I extract?

Up to 1,000 frames per GIF. The grid previews up to 300 of them; the ZIP always contains every exported frame.

How do I get just one frame from a GIF?

Set the start and end frame to the same number, or export everything and click the frame you want in the grid. Each tile downloads as its own image.

Can I turn the frames back into a GIF after editing them?

Yes. Upload the edited frames to the GIF Maker, set the delay to match the original (shown in the GIF Metadata Viewer) and export.

The ZIP will not open.

Make sure the download finished; large GIFs can produce big archives. On Windows, right-click the file and choose Extract All. Still having trouble? Please contact us and we'll be happy to help!
