How to crop a GIF
Upload a GIF
Choose or drop a GIF up to 30 MB. It appears with a crop box already placed.
Frame the shot
Drag the box to move it and pull the handles to resize. Pick a ratio such as 1:1 or 9:16 to lock its shape.
Fine-tune with numbers
Type exact X, Y, width and height values in pixels if you need precision.
Crop and download
Every frame is cropped to the same rectangle and re-optimized. Save the result or keep editing it.
When cropping is the right fix
Most GIFs carry more picture than they need. Screen recordings include toolbars and empty desktop, clips from videos keep letterbox bars, and reaction GIFs often show far more than the face that matters.
Cropping removes those pixels from every frame. The animation becomes easier to read on small screens, and the file gets lighter at the same time.
Pick the shape for where it's going
- 1:1 fits profile pictures, emoji, stickers and square feed posts.
- 16:9 matches video players, slides and most blog content areas.
- 9:16 suits phone stories and vertical layouts.
- 4:3 and 3:2 are classic photo shapes that sit comfortably inside articles.
Choose Free when you only want to trim edges and don't care about the final shape.
Watch the whole loop before you crop
A crop box that frames the first frame perfectly can cut off the action later in the animation. Let the preview play through a full loop while you adjust the box.
If you need to know exactly what happens on each frame, export them with Split GIF and check the extremes.
How it works
The crop runs through gifsicle, which trims each frame's image data without re-encoding the colors. That keeps quality identical inside the box. When a GIF uses complex per-frame palettes, we fall back to ImageMagick, rebuild every frame at full size and crop that instead.
Either way, the result is re-optimized so pixels that don't change between frames are stored only once.
Good follow-ups
After cropping, resize the GIF to the exact pixel size you need, add a caption, or squeeze it under an upload limit with Compress GIF to Size. Turned the wrong way? Rotate & Flip GIF fixes sideways clips in one click.
Crop GIF questions
Does cropping affect every frame?
Yes. The same rectangle is cut from every frame, so the animation stays aligned and the frame timing is untouched.
How do I crop a GIF to a square for Instagram or a profile picture?
Click 1:1. The box snaps to the largest square that fits, and you can drag it over the part you want to keep. If the square is then too large for the destination, follow up with Resize GIF.
Will cropping make my GIF smaller?
Almost always. Removing pixels removes data from every frame. Cropping away a static border or empty background is one of the most effective ways to cut file size without touching quality.
Can I crop a GIF to an exact pixel size?
Yes. Type the width and height into the fields under the ratio buttons, then set X and Y to choose where the crop starts. Values are in the GIF's real pixels, not the preview size.
Can I crop a GIF on my phone?
Yes. The crop box works with touch: drag inside to move it and drag the white handles to resize. Pinch-zoom the page if you need more precision.
The crop button gave an error. What now?
Make sure the box doesn't cover the entire GIF, because that would change nothing. Press Reset to start again. Still having trouble? Please contact us and we'll be happy to help!
